Choosing a Sleep Mask That Stays On All Night
A sleep mask has two jobs: block light, and still be on your face at four in the morning. A surprising number of masks do the first and fail the second, and a mask on your forehead blocks nothing at all.
The nose bridge is where light gets in
Almost all light leakage happens in the two small triangles either side of the nose. A flat mask cannot seal there because the shape of a face is not flat.
Look for a moulded nose section, an adjustable nose wire, or a contoured design with a deep nose cut-out. This single feature separates a mask that genuinely blackens a room from one that dims it.
Flat, contoured or weighted
Flat masks are cheap, pack small and are the least effective. They press on the eyelids, which some people find intolerable, and they slide.
Contoured masks have moulded eye cups that arch over the eyes, so nothing touches the lids and you can open your eyes underneath. They are bulkier and they are the right default for most people, especially side sleepers.
Weighted masks apply gentle even pressure across the eyes, which some people find settling. They behave quite differently once you turn onto your side, so try before committing.
The strap decides whether it survives the night
A single flat elastic band across the back of the head is the design most likely to ride up. It has one point of contact and nothing resisting rotation.
A split or Y-shaped strap that sits above and below the occipital bone stays put far better. So does a strap that sits above the ears rather than across them — a strap across the ear is uncomfortable within an hour of side sleeping.
Adjustable is worth having. Fixed elastic is either too tight, which causes headaches, or too loose, which causes sliding.
Materials and heat
Silk feels good and is cool but tends to slide. Cotton breathes and holds position better. Memory foam contours well and traps more heat.
If you sleep hot, avoid a thick foam mask with a full facial contact patch. If you sleep cold, it is a non-issue.
For anyone with lash extensions, a contoured mask with deep cups is the only workable option.
Fit-testing before the first night
Put it on in a lit room and look around. Any light you see is light you will see at 5am in summer.
Then lie on each side for a minute. If it shifts noticeably when you turn, it will be on your forehead by morning.
Care
Wash it. Masks sit on your face for eight hours and collect skin oil and product. Most fabric masks are hand washable; check before machine washing anything with a moulded insert or a nose wire.
Replace elastic when it stops recovering — a stretched strap is the usual reason a previously good mask starts sliding.
What we stock
